One semifinal decided the whole bet

2,147,483,648 possible brackets, 80 possible points — and the entire episode came down to Spain vs France.

The bet was simple. There are 2,147,483,648 ways to fill out a 48-team World Cup bracket. Eric built an engine to pick one: an attack/defense model fit on every international match since 1872, whose entry went in with zero human help (long story — the confession is in the episode). Thomas filled his out with a pen, circling teams on a printout. Next to Argentina he wrote "Messi + FIFA." Both were real entries on the doubling scale — 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 points per round, 80 max — graded live by the actual tournament.

How 31 games collapsed into one

The episode ends with the round of 32 graded and the score dead level, 12 to 12. Then the tournament kept playing, and something strange happened: every remaining pick on the two brackets turned out to be identical except one. Both had Argentina lifting the trophy. The only disagreement left was the other chair in the final — the model said France, Thomas said Spain — and France and Spain drew each other in the semifinal. One game, winner takes the bet. The model priced it 50.7% France. A coin flip, and it had to win the flip.

So the bet was decided before the final was even played. Both brackets bank the same 16 points if Argentina wins Sunday, so the margin can still move — 58-64 or a frozen 42-48 — but the lead cannot. The point goes to Vibes.

What the machine gets to keep

For the record, the model did not embarrass itself: 18 of 24 knockout favorites advanced, and 4 of the 6 upsets that beat it were penalty shootouts, where the math openly gives up. It just lost the one coin flip that had money on it — which is a pretty good summary of what betting on 50.7% feels like.

And one twist for Sunday

Argentina and Spain have met 14 times in 74 years. It is dead even at 6 wins each, and only one of those games ever counted. Sunday is their first ever final — and the model, free of its locked bracket, prices it 53/47 Spain. Eric's own machine is betting against his bracket's champion.
